BIM's technical programme supports the development of new fishing opportunities, responsible fishing practices and technical innovation that impact on the work of fishermen and fish farmers, as well as promoting environmental sustainability in the Irish seafood sector.

The Sea Fisheries Development Sub-Programme of the National Development Plan 2007- 2013 includes a number of measures aimed at the development of the national sea fisheries sector.
The Commercial Aquaculture Development Scheme provides grant assistance to promote the commercial development of aquaculture on a basis which is financially, technically and environmentally sustainable.
