Oyster Growth & Environmental Monitoring 2010
In 2009 significant mortalities were incurred in juvenile oysters in 17 Bays around the coast. In every case a variant strain of Ostreid herpesvirus 1 μvar (OsHV-1 μvar), was detected.
As it is generally considered that there is a high risk of juvenile oyster mortalities occuring again this year, a programme of monitoring is being put in place using sentinel seed and CTD loggers (conductivity, temperature and depth).
12,000 triploid seed from a UK hatchery and 12,000 diploid seed from an Irish hatchery are being deployed on each of 17 farms, split between the upper, middle and lower shore. Growth and survival of the stocks will be monitored by BIM Officers. The CTD loggers are placed in an oyster bag on the mid shore with the seed.
The environmental data collected will be made available online monthly, in a graphical form as shown below, for farmers to access directly.
