Skippers and Crew

We offer a range of courses for those who have chosen a career in fisheries. This highly practical training in a range of navigation and safety skills will aid those whose ambition is to become a skipper or second hand of a commercial fishing vessel.

Crew members can progress to command positions by gaining the following Certificates of Competency:

Skipper Full Certificate of Competency

Next course scheduled: 

Qualification: Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport (Fishing Vessel) Certificate of Competency are issued following successful completion of training, sea service, written and oral examinations.
Duration: 14 weeks full-time study
Course cost: €200.00 (plus €130.00 written exam fee)

Course content includes:

  • Navigation 1 and 2
  • Ship Construction and Stability
  • Meteorology and Oceanography
  • Collision Regulations

Second Hand Full

Course cost: €200.00 (plus €100.00 written exam fee)

Second Hand Limited

Qualification: Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport (Fishing Vessel) Certificates of Competency are issued following successful completion of training, sea service, written and oral examinations.
Duration: 12 weeks full-time study
Course cost: €175.00 (plus €60.00 written exam fee)

Course content includes:

  • Chartwork
  • Signals
  • Meteorology
  • Collision Regulations

Commercial Fishing QQI Award (Major) Level 5 - Further Education + Training

Next course scheduled:

Qualification: QQI Certificate in Commercial Fishing (Level 5)
Duration: 6 months full-time study
Course cost: Free of charge for new entrants
Progression: Students with two years sea service in vessels greater than 12 metres can progress to Deck Officer Certificates of Competency

Course content includes:

  • Practical skills in engineering
  • Fishing vessel operations on MFV Lough Swilly
  • Care of the catch
  • Net repair and construction
  • Navigation
  • Safety skills

Electronic Navigation Systems (Fishing)

Duration: 105 hours training

E-Learning Navigation + Stability QQI Award (Minor) Level 5 - Further Education + Training
